TWO MAGISTRATES APPOINTED

ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER OF JUSTICE POSTS AT AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON (P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 28. The Minister of Justice, Mr Mason, announced today the appointment of two new stipendiary magistrates. They are Mr W. S. Spence, of Auckland, who has been appointed for the Auckland Bench and Mr M. B. Scully, of Westport, who will be stationed in Wellington.

Mr Spence is the son of Mr W. S. Spence, secretary of the Auckland Racing Club. Born in Auckland 41 years ago, he was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, where he won a University National Scholarship, and at Auckland University College. He graduated LL.B. in 1930 and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1931. He has been associated with the firm of Nicholson, Gribbin, Rogerson and Nicholson since 1928.

Mr Spence has also been a parttime lecturer in acountancy at the Seddon Memorial Technical College for ten years, apart from a break of two and a-half years during the war. He was for three years a university examiner in procedure. Among other activities he is a vice-presi-dent of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. He was a lieutenant on the Temporary Staff in New Zealand during the war. Mr Spence is married, with two children.

Mr Scully has been in practice in Westport for a number of years as a barrister and solicitor and has had wide experience in the Supreme Magistrates’ and Wardens’ Courts. Pie is married with four children.
