WAIHI-TAURANGA HIGHWAY

rROFOSFO WOttK SHOULD BE CONTINUED

SUGGESTION BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A letter deoloring the condition of the Waihi-Tauranga Main Highwav had been to the Highw--.—s board. ■ the Auckland Automobile Association and the KaMkati Chamber of Commerce «iid the seer°tary of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce at the monthly meeting. The members were aware, the letter had staled, that a largo section of the road in cmestion will be eliminated as a highway and that a new road would be an expensive matter. The chamber had pointed out that. at least ten years ago. there had been a survey made which would eliminate the gullv on the other side of the Wainui bridee. This had not been proceeded with and, as it would be a nermanent road, the chamber suggested that the work should be continued as it would make for roading and vehicle economy.

In replying the Auckland Automobile Association pointed out that the present, shortage of labour was a serious deterrent in this matter but that the Highways Board had decided as a temnorary measure to tarseal all state highways within an approximate period of five years. Present alignments will be retained, the association pointed out. and it was hoped that at the end of the five years there would be sufficient labour and material to commence major reconstruction schemes.
