More Telephones Wantedd

Request From Mount Maunganui

Additional Post Boxes

Also Requested

(Times Correspondent)

Condemnation of what were regarded *as the inadequate postal and public telephone facilities available at Mount Maunganui was expressed at the last meeting of the Mount Maunganui Chamber of Commerce when these services were discussed.

Mentioning the need for additional postal boxes in the borough, Mr Aked pointed out that, apart from one letter box in a rather out-of-the-way situation. in Oceanview Road, there were no boxes in the southern portion of the borough. People living at that end of the town had to walk to the post office to post a letter. “Surely,” he remarked, “a place the size of Mount Maunganui warrants a more reasonable service than this, particularly with the rapid, expansion of the town.” He suggested that a box should be erected at the corner of Maunganui Road and Salisbury Avenue and another at the junctions of Maunganui Road and Bain Street to serve business people and residents in those vicinities.

Other members of the Chamber agreed that additional boxes were very necessary in the southern portion of the borough, particularly during the summer, when the tremendous influx 6f visitors heavily taxed the staff at the Post Office. The need for a slot telephone at both the northern and southern ends of the borough was also mentioned by another member who referred to the inconvenience, and possible serious consequences, in cases of illness. It was stated that the phone box outside the Post Office was much in demand and that it was quite a common sight to see a queue of intending users awaiting their turn. The Chamber of Commerce resolved to write to the PostmasterGeneral stressing the need for improved facilities in the way of additional post boxes and slot phones as suggested, and urging that consideration be given to the provision of these.
