GREEN VEGETABLE BUG
PARASITES RELEASED IN NORTH
BREEDING STATION AT * PAIHIA
(P.A.) Whangarei, March 1 In an effort to control the green vegetable bug, nezara viri'dula which thi’S season has ruined Kaitaia district vegetable gardens and several fruit crops, parasites have been released. They attack the bugs’ eggs. The work was carried out by Dr R. Cumber, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Nelson, in co-operation with the Cawthron Institute.
Dr Cumber has been stationed at Paihia, where he has established a breeding station for the parasite which is the natural enemy of the pest. Dr Cumber has released 3000 parasites in the Kaitaia Public Hospital garden. The newcomer, which in the adult- stage is onlv ha’f the size of a sandfly, should spread further.
Releases are planned in the Wairapakauri area. As well as attacking tomatoes and beans, nezara viridula has caused heavy loss in the far north this summer among peaches, corn and melons.
