Freezing Works Ownership

Roiitltlnnd Farmers Are Dissatisfied Statement Of Dominion President (P.A.) Invercargill, March 1 “Sou* bland farmers are dissatisfied with the statement by the Dominion council of Federated Farmers rn ownership of freezing works/’ said Mr W. Baird, provincial president of the organisation. •'ll reaffirmation of support for the principal of producer ownership and control was recorded at the last meeting of the council it was not recorded in the minutes, nor has the Southland delegate any recollection of it. Further, there are no grounds resulting from the meeting for the statement that the Meat Producers’ Board would co-operate with th federation. “The well-known endeavour in New Zealand today for a new freezing works is the widely supported move of farmers in Southland to have new works built in the province on a 50-50 ownership , basis. The statement could not have had the sanction of the Dominion president. Mr W. N. Perry, who has written to Southland farmers informing them that the new works for Southland is a matter entirely between them and the Meat Board, and not the affair of the Dominion council. Similarly, members of the Meat Board have pointed out to Southland farmers clearly the weaknesses of farmers’ co-operative works.”
