GROWTH OVER ROADWAYS
CONCERN IN TAURANGA COUNTY DECISION TO PROSECUTE OFFENDERS
The attention of the Tauranga County Council to the growth of fern and scrub which was overhanging the roads was drawn by the county engineer (Mr N. G. Hansen) at the monthly meeting. In some cases, he pointed out, this had grown to such an extent on many county roads as to make proper grading difficult and the growth was becoming greater 'all the trme. The engineer asked that the council decide whether it wished the Noxious Weeds Inspector to carry on with prosecutions and force the owners to do this work, or whether it was wished to have this growth cut back by the county works staff. , Cr E. H, Western expressed the view that the farmers could do this work at half the cost compared with the cost if the county staff was used. He added that some ratepayers were of the opinion that they paid enough in rates and the county staff could do the work. The chairman (Mr H. B. Capamagian) remarked that if the county staff did the work on its own accord then the rates would go up even more. The council decided to prosecute one offender in each riding.
