Reports from Jerusalem say that large Arab forces today attacked two Jewish settlements in southern Palestine. At dawn, bands of armed Arabs are said to have thrown up barricades and mined the roads leading to the settlements, while others from the hills' swept the villages with automatic fire. The Jews are reported to have laid down a heavy counter barrage.
There were more clashes between Jews and Arabs in the no man's land between Jaffa and Tel Aviv. Four Arabs and one Jew were killed and eight people were wounded. In Haifa, a British police constable was killed when a lorry exploded. Other people were killed and a number of buses were damaged. In Jerusalem, a British civilian working for the army was shot dead outside a British military headquarters. His wife, who was Jewish, was also shot and has since died. She was the daughter of a Tel Aviv judge. *
