ALMOST AT A STANDSTILL
TREK OF REFUGEES ACROSS EUROPE Berlin, Sept. 22. The commander of the American forces in Europe,- Lieutenant-Gen-eral J. T. McNarney, announced that the underground trek of refugees across Europe to Palestine was almost at a standstill as a result of Britain's clamping down on illegal immigrants. The movement acioss Germany to all intents and purposes had stopped.
The chairman of the Hebrew Committee of National Liberation, Mr Samuel Merlin, stated in Paris that he was very surprised at General McNarney's statement and hoped it would immediately be withdrawn. "I do not think anything will stop the Jews getting through," he said. Renter's correspondent says the Committee of National Liberation has acknowledged affiliation with the Irgun Zvai Leumi.
