■ STALIN TAKES SALUTE Biggest Parade Yet Seen In Russia Pitched Fights Break Out In Trieste London, May 1. News has been coming in of the May Day celebrations in the capitals of Allied, liberated and former enemy countries all over the world. In Moscow Generalissimo Stalin took the salute at a huge military and workers’ parade in Red Square. Moscow radio called the parade the most tremendous yet seen in Russia. A Paris correspondent says people were out in the streets almost at the minute and many thousands marched in the traditional procession. In the Russian sector of Berlin about 200.000 people took part in the first May Day celebrations since the Nazis came to power. A correspondent reports that he had the impression that it Avas an organised rather than a spontaneous demonstration. From early in the morning in Vienna workers were streaming into the city from outlying districts in orderly procession. The Socialists and Communists held separate demonstrations. In Trieste Allied military police broke up pitched fights between Yugoslav and Italian demonstrators. In Athens croAvds applauded trade union leaders Avho criticised the British occupation. The May Day celebrations in Teheran Avere the biggest ever held there. Workers gathered outside the headquarters of the left Aving, Tudeh Party. A correspondent says ■ there were no incidents. Tokio had its first May Day celebrations for ten years. One correspondent said that 300,000 people gathered outside the Imperial Palace. There Avere no disturbances and there Avas a holiday atmosphere.
