MR AND MRS HILFORD HONOURED FAREWELL GATHERING AT THE MOUNT (From our Correspondent.) The Peter Pan Hall, Mount Maunganui, was filled on Thursday evening when the school children and residents of the Mount were present to say farewell to Mr and Mrs A. IT. Hilford, who are leaving the district, Mr Hilford having been appointed headmaster of Ngaruawahia school. The function took the form of a musical evening, the first half being supplied by the scholars who gave a number of folk songs and dances under the conductorship of Mr Hilford and accompanied on the piano by Mrs Hilford. Items in the second half were given by Mr C. Edwards (bass-baritone), harmonica and guitar duets by Messrs Ashworth and Higgins, recitations by Mr Claris, and comic songs by Mr Hunter. At the conclusion of the programme Mr IT. Hodge, past chairman of the School Committee, asked the senior girl scholar, M. Raymond, to hand to Mr and Mrs Hilford a silver tea service and tray, suitably inscribed, as a token of recognition of their services rendered to Mount Maunganui during their eight years’ residence. ; After Mr Hodge had addressed the gathering, the following representatives of local organisations with whom Mr and Mrs Hilford have been actively connected, also spoke, the Mayor (Mr S. E. Macdonald), Mrs H. T. Pattie (Plunket Society), Mr C. Gordon (Golf Club) and Mr S. F. Miller (Sea Scouts). Each, speaker expressed sincere regret at losing the invaluable services of the guests of honour and wished them both success and happiness in their new home. Supper was supplied by the ladies.
