FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following items of interest are reprinted from the Bay of Plenty Times fifty years ago:
As a number of persons in this district, who do not subscribe to the Bay of Plenty Times or help it in any other form. are very fond of saying that we do nothing towards the advancement of the district, we intend publishing on Friday next a number of notices that have appeared in various papers in many parts of New Zealand during the present month, relating to Tauranga and its newspaper. It is an undeniable fact that those who never help a paper to the extent of a shilling a year are the first to find fault with it. We have little to complain of in the way ol support, as the prosperous appearance of our sheet denotes, but, at the same time, we should like every head of a family to help us along by subscribing, and then we should be better able to help along the district. A resident in Tauranga writes thus of the Bay of Plenty Times: During a journey I lately made to the southern part of New Zealand I saw a good many of the daily papers, both morn h;g and evening. I do not recollect any of the country ones that contained nearly so much reading matter as the Times, Even it's namesake in Wellington, the New Zealand Times, does., not ordinarily contain so much, and it is the only daily newspaper published all along the three southern provincial districts of the North Island whose reading matter runs the Bay of Plenty Times anything near competition. Of course during the session of Parliament, profuse "copy" is supplied to it from the loud-mouthed members of both houses. A remarkable rainbow-tinted haTo was noticeable round the moon about S p.m. on Monday, the colours being extremely brilliant; the weather prophets of course predicted a speedy change to "bad weather, and the correctness has been proved by results. ll||]!ll!!li!lillllillil!!ill!lliilii!lil!li!lilill!II!W^
