HEAVY ASSAULTS
MALTA GARRISON Waves of Bombers All Intercepted London, Oct. 12. Very heavy Axis air attacks have been made on Malta. Over 200 bombers and fighters attacked in five waves. At least 16 were destroyed and many more damaged. We lost one plane. The assaults were all intercepted before they reached the island and few of the enemy planes got through. Each wave consisted of bombers heavily escorted by fighters. It is pointed out, however, that the fighters got such a rough reception that the fifth and last wave of bombers had no fighter escort.
