CIVILIAN TYRES

U.S. GOVERNMENT OFFERS TO PURCHASE The United States Government is making available a fund of 150,000.000 dollars to finance its programme of buying all new and used tyres from civilian owners of cars and trucks who wish to sell them for resale to war workers or for reclaiming. There is assurance from the Government that no plan of demanding tyres is in contemplation, and that this move is a voluntary one. Stocks of tyres beyond five per passenger car and beyond the number used on multiple-wheel trucks are indeterminate, but it is widely calculated that several million were bought in expectation of a price rise even before the Japanese moved in the Far East. In addition to the plan of buying tyres in the hands of the public, the Government has already signified its willingness to buy dealer stocks and stocks in the hands of manufacturers, which are' about half normal. All of course, are frozen as to sale to uncertificated holders.
