MECHANIC JOE

ANSWERS OWNERS' PROBLEMS

INCREASING BACK AXLE HUM

Q. —For the past five or six months I have heard a hum coming from the back end of my 1936 14 h.p. Saloon. This seems to be getting worse, and is very much louder when I take my foot off the accelerator and let the car drive the engine. There is plenty of oil in the axle. Is it possible to cure the trouble by adjustments?—"J. H. Mel." A.—lt is possible that the crown wheel and pinion require adjustment; this is effected by adjusting the pinion either one way or the other. On the other hand, the noise may be caused by. excessive wear on the pitch lines of the crown wheel or simply by normal wear and tear. It

is suggested that the differential be removed and examined for one of these points.
