MOTOMATHS
A SERIES OF PUZZLES AND PROBLEMS WITH A MOTORING FLAVOUR Smash-and-grab raiders had made off in three cars, and the police were interrogating witnesses as to the registration numbers. "Two of the cars had four-figure numbers; the third had a two-figure number," recalled the first witness. "I don't remember what the figures were," said the second, "but I did notice, as a coincidence, that no figure was repeated in any of the three numbers." "I noticed something odder still," said the third witness. "All three registration numbers were perfect squares." Can you find the three numbers?
ANSWER TO "MOTOMATHS" PROBLEM ON MOTORING PAGE There are two possibilities. The numbers could be 81, 2034 and 7569; or 81, 3249 and 7056. In both cases all the integers are used once and once only, and all three numbers are squares.
