ASHER BROTHERS
At New Year, there was a re-union in Auckland of five Asher brothers, all of whom originally came from Tauranga. They were Ernie, George and Albert (Opae), of Auckland, Jack of Tokaanu and Tom of Wellington. Another brother, Mr Henry Asher of Te Puke had aoped to be up for the re-union but was prevented by illness. The Asher boys were best known in the football world, all being early Bay of Plenty Rugby representatives. Later they became Rugby League stalwarts. Ernie has represented Auckland and New Zealand, George, Auckland, and the famous Albert (Opae) has played for Auckland, New Zealand, Australasia and was a Rugby Union All Black in the 1903 Australian tour. “ A sister of the Ashers is Mrs Lees of Papamoa.
