SPARE THE TREES

Sir, —Well done “Dover of the Beautiful!” It is to be hoped that every member of the. Borough Council, and particularly the Town Planning Committee, will be moved to action by your letter “Spare the Trees” which appeared in a recent issue of our local paper, and that a halt will be called to further acts of vandalism in our Borough. I have been a resident of this pretty little town for, just on four years, and what appealed to me most of all when I first arrived here, was the glorious old tre'es growing in different parts of Tauranga. However, it has been, sir, a decided, shock to me to realise how little these trees are valued locally as a beautiful asset to the town, judging by the way in which they are being ruthlessly felled. . "

Stately old oaks were growing on two of the boundaries of the State housing block, but have all gone under the axe—only a bare ; treeless roadway remains. Along one boumdary of the State houses now being erected on the opposite side of Cameron Road, there is at present a row of chestnut trees on, the roadway. As soon as the new school is built, there these stately trees will be sacrificed tor the sake of space and air. It will be a crying shame if thfs beauty spot at the front door of our town is vandalised. If there are sufficient members of the Council sufficiently interested, it may still be possible to procure this reserve for the Borough, but they will have to get busy. Surely the Council could by exchange or other means, obtain “Hillsdene.” The Council has .other stjes suitable for a school to exchange for it, and there is no other site in the borough so suitable as “Hillsdene” for a camping area. I trust efforts will be made by those in authority with this object in view. “TREES”
