BOROUGH COUNCIL QUARRY PROPOSAL
Sir, —There is a most remarkable letter in Wednesdays* issue on the above proposal. Is Cr Moffatt really serious and is the business of the Borough Council carried on in the manner indicated? Did the Council really commit itself to a course of action with reference to the proposed quarry, without proper enquiry being made. Is it really a fact, as stated by Cr Moffatt, that the Borough Engineer was not even asked to supply a report on such an important proposal? Is the Council so weak that it will support a proposal of this kind sim-J ply because the Mayor “has confidence in it?”
Now, Sir, I will put the following questions:
1. —Was this particular quarry proposal investigated and rejected by the Borough Council over ten year's ago?
2. —Was the same proposal investigated and rejected by the Tauranga County Council? 3. —Was the same quarry proposal investigated and rejected by the Public Works Department? Cr Moffatt is not on solid ground when he suggests his estimates for opening quarry, crushing, and cartage, etc. lam afraid they are just guesses or has he, too, “confidence in it.”
The real fact is that Duncan Ltd. supply metal delivered on the streets at 10s 3d per yard net —a good price for the Council with a guaranteed supply of metal as against a proposal of which nothing can be certain. The cost of opening, quarry and quality of stone could no doubt be obtained from the Council's own records, from the County Council, or from the Public Works Department. The P.S. to Cr Moffatt’s letter is worthy of consideration. Does he suggest that the “Council in action” provides such good entertainment. “RATEPAYER.”
