OBITUARY
CAPTAIN W. AI. BARCLAY The death is reported from Wellington of Captain William Alalo de Rune Barclay, third and last surviving son of the late Sir David AVilliam Barclay, aged 9 6 years. Captain Barclay was born at Mauritius and was educated at Cheltenham College, England, and at the Alilitary College, Sandhurst. He was appointed to the 24th Regiment, with which he served in Burma during 18 6 5 and 186 6. He was invalided out of Burma because of fever, and went to the north of Ireland. In ISSI Captain Barclay came to New Zealand and was editor of the Bay of Plenty Times for several years. He joined the Lands Department about 1885, and later transferred to the Department of Roads and Bridges (now Public He was private secretary to the late Air John Ballance when the latter was Premier of New Zealand. About 3 0 years ago, Captain Barclay retired, but he acted as recruiting officer at the AA'ellington Town Hall during the Great AA ? ar, receiving a French decoration for his services. During the time he was in the Government service he made a survey of the hills around AA'ellington for defence purposes. Captain Barclay’s wife died in 1919. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
