The attendance was evidence that the Club is receiving the support it deserves, the room being filled to capacity. The proceeds will go towards a building suitable for all the activities in connection with the Club. A ligfit supper was served by the ladies’ social committee, the running of the card playing being in the capable hands of Messrs T. Magee and K. Sutherland. The prize-winners were:—Ladies’ first prize, Miss Repia; consolation, Mrs Cheetham; gentlemen’s first, Mr Willis; consolation, Mr Gordon. SUCCESSFUL GALA EVENING The Committee of the local Labour Party organised an evening last Saturday night, catering for the enjoyment of old and young. The night was fortunately fine, the beauty of which was added to by a crescent moon which gave a faint light to the procession of decorated vehicles which commenced at the Beach Road termination of Maunganui Road, and wended its way with the aid of torches and car lights towards the Peter Pan Hall, where festivities continued until midnight. The parade of children’s decorated vehicles around the dance floor of the hall was a colourful sight, and the judging was made difficult by the wide range of pretty and ingenious vehicles from which to select the final three, who were Beverley Hickford’s decorated pram Ist prize; Noeline Tew’s decorated bicycle, 2nd prize: Dave Bradford’s decorated bicycle representing a warship, 3rd prize. Great credit was due to Miss O’Donnell and her school staff who trained the children for the charming display of folk dancing which was greatly admired. Dancing was indulged in for the remainder of the evening by the grown-ups to music supplied by the Midnight Echo Band from the Kaimais. A very capable ladies’ committee served a delightful supper, apples being also distributed to the children. Mr W. Cowling acted as master of ceremonies and thanked the people for their support and assistance. PERSONAL Miss Betty Pinfold, of Hamilton, was the guest of Mrs C. J. West for the week-end.
