LIMITATION OF ARMAMENTS

AEROPLANES AND SUBMARINES. Aust.—N.Z. Cable Assoc Rec. Dec. 21, 8.50 a.m. New, York, Dec. 20. The New York Herald's Washington correspondent says President Ccolidge would call a conference for the limitation of aeroplanes and submarines in warfare if he had offi-cial-assurances that such invitations would be welcomed. Two resolutions have been already introduced in Congress, calling upon the President to further the cause of continued disarmament and sentiment has not grown stronger iu view of Mr Denby's recent- request for an appropriation for navy modernisar lion. The correspondent states that Washington regards France as a stumbling block in the way of such a conference at the present time. There is a conviction, however, that Britain will completely favour the proposed limitation. Enthusiasts among Congressmen even declare that the power of public opinion in Britain and the United States may not only force the Governments to seriously consider another conference, but even impel French compliance. New York, Dec. 20. Mr Suthadand denied that he said Britain was two years behind the United States in commercial aviation, but Britain did abandon lighter aircraft two years ago for economy and is now revising the same. . A s regards aeroplanes Britain was equal to any country, except France. In commercial aviation Britain probably excelled the United States because of the Government subsidies, which will be -withdrawn ten years hence when the industry is probably self-supporting.
