TAURANGA BOROUGH COUNCIL AFFAIRS

DEALT WITH AT SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council was held last night. Present; Hi s Worship the the Mayor, Mr B. Dive (in the chair), Councillors C. Whiting, F. J. Allely, F. M, Mullions, V. J. Scantlebury, C. Clinkard, G. H. Ollard, J. H. Beale, and W. W. Jones. The question of appointment of foreman deferred from the last ordinary meeting, was considered. On the motion of Cr Whiting, seconded by Cr Beale, the Council unanimously agreed to appoint Mr W. H. Neilson, of Taihape, to the position. Cr Ollard said the new foreman should be allowed to select bis own workmen. He moved—That the present workmen be given a month’s notice of the termination of their services. Cr Mullions seconded. Cr Beale opposed the motion, Cr Whiting contended that the Council should wait and hear what the foreman had to say. Cr Clinkard regarded the motion as too drastic. The motion was negatived, only Crs Ollard and Mullions voting for it. The Clerk reported that Mr G. Davison desired that he be allowed two weeks annual leave, which was due. It was decided that Mr Davison be paid a fortnight’s wages in lieu of leave. Hoad Roller Boiler. Tbe Inspector of Machinery, Auckland, wrote regarding inspection oT the Council's road roller boiler. He stated that the Tauranga disrtrict is due in February next and an inspector of machinery will make this one of his first inspections here. In the meantime, should the Council wish to use this road roller boiler there is no objection to doing so, providing that not more than 160 lbs steam pressure are used, pending the next visit of an inspector. Cr Clinkard moved—That the letter be received.—Seconded by Cr Ollard and carried. Pictures on Christmas Day. Mr J. Welsh; manager of the Opera. House Pictures, wrote applying for permission to show pictures in the Opera Hone .on Christmas Day. He submitted the programme which he proposed to show. Cr Clinkard moved—That the application be not granted.—Cr Ollard seconded. Cr Whiting said the Council had previously granted applications of a similar nature. The motion was carried by five votes to four. Recreation Ground. The Manager of the Australian Mutual Provident Society wrote regarding recreation .ground loan of £3250, and stated he would be glad to hear if the Minister of Education hag given, or is likely to give, his consent, to the sale of land to- the borough. It was decided to reply to the effect that the Council had not yet received a reply from the Minister of Education.
