PROPOSED SITE FOR PAENGAROA HALL

Who Was Ihe Objector?

The following .letter from the Hon.?J. G. Coates, Minister of ■ Pjublrc Works, was ■ read ac the meeting of the County Council yesterday : "With further reference to your letter of March 8 last, enclosing one from the Secretary of the Paengaroa Hall Committee, relative to closing a portion of a road in the Paengaroa township for the purpose of building a public hall thereon, I have made careful . inquiries into^this matter and find that the piece of land in question is in the middle of the township, and although a convenient place on which to erect the hall, there are plenty of unoccupitd sections where the hall could also' be erected, but at a litth extra cost. An open piece of ground like the piece of land in question is a great asset to any township, and would be of great benefit when the township increases in pupulation. Under these circumstances I regret that I am unable to see my way to concur in the Hall Committee's proposal."

Mr C, Bailey, hon. secretary of the Paengaroa Public Hall Committee, wrote acknowledging a copy of the Minister's reply, as forwarded by the county clerk.

Cr Vercoe said he would like to know who was the objector? He believed that an objection had been made by a private individual through the Public Works Department. The Paen , garoa people unanimously favoured'the site. Crßall said there was no doubt that someone had written to the Department. ,■ Cr Vercoe moved — That the Public Works Department bt asked to furnish the name of the objector.—Lapsed, no seconder, Cr Lally said he did not think from the beginning that the committee would succeed. It was agreed that the Chairman write to the Minister of Public Works^ pointing out that the decision was against the wishes ot the great majority of the people of Paengaroa.
