TRIBUTE TO MR HOLMES
i At the meeting of the Tatr ranga County Council yesterday a letter -was read from the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce, asking support of the following resolution : "That this Chamber view! with great regret the resignation of Mr J. D. Holmes, Public Works engineer, and that the Government be urged to retain his services and pay him a salary commensurate with his ability." The Council was asked to support the resolution and to wire the Minister for Public Works to that effect. Cr Vercoe slid Mr Holmes had accomplished a great deal since taking over his position atTauranga, and he had,proved himself a capable officer. Cr McNaughton concurred, and said Mr Holmes 'was a man of abiilty. Cr Lally added a tribute to the energy shown by Mr Holmes. Cr Vercoe moved—That the Whakatane Chamber of Com* merce's resolution be supported, and that a telegram be also sent to the Minister of Public Works. The motion, was seconded by Cr Lally and carried unanimously.
