House of Representatives.

Wellington, Oct 1. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 yesterday. SirJ. Ward said the Finance Bill would go to the Governor to-morrow and when signed the new scale of stamp duties on cheques would come into foi'Ce on Movember-lst. Leave was given to introduce the Friendly Societies Bill and the Education Reserves Amendment Bill. The Premier made a statement concerning toe business to be transacted. He said the session would close towards the end of next week. Hon. J. Allen said in view of the promises to the Home Government it might be necessary to stimulate recruiting. After G,OOO .troops leave next month 4,000 men were wanted every two months. He read a statement issued to employers, asking their co-operation. A lengthy debate followed on the report of the Public Petitions Committee recommending that the petition of M. O'Neill, of Te Wara, praying for compensation for land taken for railway purposes, should be referred to the Government for further confiideration and inquiry. The debate .was interrupted by the disner adjournmentf. The amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Expeditionary Forcfls Bill were agreed to, Mr Wilford stating that the amendments removed objection to the proposed method of conducting court martials. At the evening sitting the following Bills were put through all stages and passed without amendment: —Dairy Industry Amendment, Prisoners Detention, Destitute Persons Amend - ment, Footwear Regulations Amendment, Mining Amendment, Coal Mines i Amendment, Local Elections Amendment, and New Zealand Society of Accountants Amendment The Counties Amendment Bill was withdrawn on account of amendments moved by the Minister not having been circulated. The Premier suggested that tfae House should meet on Saturday morning to disciißS the measure. The Miners Phthisis Bill was also put through all stages in committee. A clause, providing that a person re- , ceiving relief under this Bill, be not entitled to a pension under the Pensions Act was struck out. The House rose at H. 45 p.m. I Wellington, Oct 2. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 yesterday. The Public Works Statement and Estimates were laid on the table. The remainder of the afternoon was taken up discussing reports. On the House resuming, at 2.30, Hon. W. H. Herries Jaid the annual Railways Statement on the table, A chbate for an hour followed. A discussion then took place on th« Public Works Statement, which was continued till 1.15 *a.m., when the House went into committee to consider the Estimates. These totalled £2,803,550 and were passed without amendment. The House rose at 2.30 a.m.
