The weather was untavourable for the Webb-Hannan race till an hour before tne start, though the river was as smooth as a mill pond. Webb was favourite,, fair odds being laid. Both men reached the starting point at 12.15, looking fit. Hannan won the toss «\nd chose the inside position on the left.
