WORKERS AND CONSCRIPTION.
Federal Premier Opposed to
Compulsion.
Rec Sept 24, 10 p.m. Melbourne, Sept 24. A deputation from the Trades Hall Council asked Mr Fisher, Federal Premier, to make a public announcement concerning his attituJe and the attitude of the Government regarding conscription. Mr Fisher, replying, said "You wanted a,private conversation and I declined. This is a public question and the only person who can announce the policy is myself or somebody in my place. I am irrevocably opposed to conscription. I have not discussed it witn my colleagues and I am sure I speak for them when I say no Bill will be introduced in Parliament before thosesto whom we owe our positions are given an opportunity of expressing their opinion. I will make the necessary announcement on toe question at the proper time. Conscription shall not be brought about by anything said at a public meeting. The dV.ly question that the deputation need ask is: 'Was it the intention of the Government to introduce a Conscription Bill.' " The Leader of the deputation said: "Then we ask it in that way?" Mr Fisher replie'd: "No."
