SERIOUS SITUATION.
Whole Strength of Britain must be Utilised.
Rec Sept 19, 2 p.m London, Sept 17. Mr Winston Churchill, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, addressing the munition workers at Enfield, said it was difficult for a public man to speak on any topic at the present time. Many people were trying to make difficulties and great prtiiicial divisions on matters which should be approached in a spirit of impartialty and goodwill. During five months tne affairs of the Allies had not gone as well as they might have hoped. There were thrae outstanding events, which had rot been disasters, but'disappointnienls. Firstly, a series of resolute and costly attacks had been made on the Germans' lines in France and Fianders and although groucd was gained the lines were not pierced. Secondly, we gained invaluable ground a* the Dardanelles which led us towards a decisive conclusion, but we had not gained the vantage points at which we aimed. Thirdly, there was the invasion of Russia while Russia was rearming and recovering her lost strength on new ground, but an unmistakable additional burden fell on Britain. The situation was a very serious one and the war could only be carried to a successful conclusion if Britain utilised the whole strength of her human and national capacity. If the great crimes that had been committed amongst the weak and helpless,, upon the laws of peace,, customs of civilisation, and dictates of humanity were allowed to go unpunished the evil-doer would emerge chastened perhaps, but with his faculty for harm intact. Then a period of unrest and brief troubled peace can only be »the interlude between this great war and another conflict."
