Russians' Brilliant Victory at

Tarnopol.

Rec Sept 10, 9.20 a.m. Petrograd, Sept 9. Official— In order to occupy a better covered j position we retreated a little from the right bank of the Lautze. The Germans st.t up a violent bombardment, accompanied by asphyxiating gases on our troops occupying the outlet and lakes in the Novthkoki region. Stubborn German attacks from Grodno continue. We repulsed an attack in tbe direction of Skidel, inflicting great loss on the enemy. We achieved a great success at Tarnopol. The German Third Guards, and a Division ot the 48th Reserves reinforced the Austrians at the bridge. A great quantity of heavy and light artillery was concentrated and the enemy prepared for a decisive attack for several days. A Stubborn Battle. We fixed the night of the 7th for forestalling the enemy. We took the offensive and after a stubborn fight on the River Doljonka the Germans were completely defeated. Ihe Germans, at the end of the engagement, developed an artillery fire of the most extraordinary intensity, and only Jthe impossibility of replying with the same weight of metal prevented us further developing our success. Germans Suffer Enormous Losses. Besides enormous losses in killed and wounded, the Germans left over two hundred officers and eight thousand prisoners. Of the thirty guns captured fourteen were of heavy calibre. Many machine guns and other booty were also taken. Conflict at Sereth. Our troops reoccupied their original position at Sereth. I We expelled the enemy from a aeries of villages in the Tremsbovl district, capturing 2,500 prisoners, 103 guns, and, ten quickfirers. Our flank attacks stopped the Austrian offensive in the lower Sereth. We captured 1,000 prisoners and some quickfirers. Vistula Theatre. Our successful issue from difficult positions in, the Vistula theatre which were surrounded by the enemy, is .snaking itself felt by partial successes.
