HIGH SCHOOL RESERVE

QUESTION OF BE LEASING

A letter was icad at the last meeting of the Tauranga District High School Committee from the Secretary of the •Education Board, who wrote as folluWs :— "I have to inform you that the lease of the high school reserve, section oM, of section 1, Tauranga township, containing eight acres, will expire on the 121 h April next. Rent at the rate of £1-3 a year is at present being received for the reserve. The Govern - raent valuation of tlie reserve, made iv 101-2, is £2,500, plus £2o for fencing. I have to ask that the Committee will be goo:l enough to furnish tho Hoard with their recommendation as to the disposal of thai; site at tho expiration uf the lease. I may staU that tho Board has no power to grant a lease for a louger period than 21 years." The Chairman &aid he was sanguine that in the course of a few years there would be a sufficient number of pupils to warrant the establishment of a now high school in Tauranga. Ho suggested that the Committee recommend the Board to lease the reserve for a period of, pay, two years, with a proviso that the lease be terminable bjr three mouths' notice to the tenant, lie considered that the land should n<;t be leased for a lengthy term. Messrs Crabbe, Vickery, Bickers and Chappell all spoke on the subject and endorsed tho views of tho Chairman.

The following motion was passod unanimously—That in view of the fact that the committee is strongly of ooinion that in the course of another two years the new high school, under a Board of Governors, wiU be a certainty, the recommendation is that the ground ba put up to auction, for grazing, for a term not exceeding two years, tenancy to be at will, subject to throo months' notice of termination.
