LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The appointment of Mr J. B. Gow a<* a member of the Assessment Court for the Whakatar.e County district is gazetted.

A notification appears in last week's Gazette changing the name of "Wade," the well-known locality near Auckland, to "Silverdale."

Local fishermen evidently got on to the hapuka ground* last month, as they were able to ship no less than 105 of these fi h to the Auckland mar ket.

The principal exports from the p->rt of Tauranga for the month of May were as under: —628 bales of fibre and ♦ow, 198 cases and 150 parcels of fish. 20S cases of fruit, 124 sacks of maize, 287 caseß of butter. 93 fat pig?, and a considerable quantity of poultry, eggs, potatoes, chaff and general produce.

At the meetinar of the County Council on Tuesday the Chairman reminded rcembers that as the first Tuesday in the month of July falls on the first day of that month the ordinary meeting of the Council will be b:ld on the second Tuesday of the month, viz., the Bth of July.

A final reminder is given ot the public meeting to be held in the Coronation Holl at 8 o'clock this evening for the purpose of considering the drainage loan proposals. The subject is an important one for ratepayers within the area and no doubt there will be a large attendance.

The experiment of growing potatoes in Hag ley Park has proved a financial ?ucce3.°, the Domains Board having made a profit of about £800 from the teverteen acre? ploughed and sown last ye^r, and there seems to be no reason why the venture should cot lie repeated on another plot. Kut the Board should not forget that the lady hockey players have a claim upon 3 portion of the potato revenue this year. They submitted with pood grace when the L'oard said that the improvement of the hockey ground demanded the sowing of a crop/ and they will expect now to be provided with a really good level sward. They would not be very unreasonable if they asked for a place to hang coats and change their footgear.—Lyttelton Timei.

A circumstantial story is in circulation, to the effect that the Civil Service Commissioners drew up regulations to be observed by the Government Printing Office; that these were sent out to that office to be printed; and that the men setting them up in type took strong exception tv seine of the proposed regulations, which would have deprived them of some of the improvements introduced under the regime of Mr Fisher, the Minister in charge of the office. Jt is stated that a plain hint was given that if the regulations were going to be insisted on there would rot be anyone in the office to set them up. The proposed regulations were, thereiore, withdrawn, fir the present at any rate.
