Football Notes

(By Onlookeb.] The Star match oa the 24th is, I believe, not coming off, that clnb being engaged, but iu its place the Northern Club are uuxious to meet two teams from Milton on that day. There is no doubt the committee will make arrangements to tbis rffect, as players seem very eager to have a trip to Danedin on the Queen's Birthday. The Lawrence Club will visit Milton during this month ; at least, my informant has it on good authority that such is their intention. The s<cretary of the local club received word lately from Roxburgh to tbe effect that the club would, if it were at nil possible, tako a run down to Miltou, when the L«wrence-Roxburgh match was played at Lawrence. I hope the game will eveutaate, as a most enjoyable time was spent by all wht-n the Roxburgh team visited Milton Bocae five years ago ; they were beateu then by 7pts to 3pts, but it is reported that tbey play a much Bupeiior game now than formerly. A club on Association lines is on the boards at present, in fact, a ball has been ordeicd, I uudersund, and if suffici nt support can be obtained, there is no doubt something definite will result. I know no specific argument against the formation and ultimate success of Buch a club, and I wiah the affair every success. Perhaps the " rugbios " will pit a team against them, — it would be all Milton to a wheelbarrow of clay, on the former, if they did,— who can tell ? Owing to pressure of work at the Woollen Mill, the match Mill v. Pot. tery did not take place, but a big muster of playera was present, and a splendid practice was held. Some twenty odd members put in good work and evidently mean to get into form, as play was continued for nearly two hours. It has been circulated that the annual expenditure in the salaries of football players in the United Kingdom amounts to an aggregate of £1,078,272 sterling a year. A dispute between two Gisborne football teams the other day, over a free kick, culminated in a free fight) which put an end to the game. Football up North appears to bo degenerating like it is in America — of course it is not doing so in the South. Oh, no !
