Hillend
(From Oor Own Correspondent.)
April 28th. CROPS &C We have lately enjoyed some fine weather, and the farmers having taken advantage of it, their crops are now all safely stacked, and they are singing a new version of an old song, "Wait for the mill "-—till your neighbor has done with it. Some of the oafc crops are threshed in the lower epd of the district ; the yields are very satisfactory, tbe Messr*? Campbell"' running about 50 bushels to the acre — very fair for Manuka Island Estate. I hear that Mr Millar, the proprietor of tbe remainder of the Manuka Island Estate, is willing to BeU a section or two on most advantageous terms to any bona fide settler. Mr Gerkins new residence is finished and occupied by tbe proprietor. It is a great* improvement to the district and enlivens a formetly barren spot. TIIE SCHOOL The school has reopened after a month's holiday with a very poor attendance but this is a common failing in our district. The School committee election passed off very quietly on Monday evening only the former members turning up, so they of course resume office. 1 believe it is intended to hold theannnal school social shortly.
