WRECKS OFF PORT PHILIP.
<» The ship Joseph Seamell, from New York, has been totally wrecked near Cape Otway. The crew reached the chore in the ship'a boats with great difficulty. The Cragieburn, a four-masted ship, bound from Melbourne to Wellington, also went ashore between Sorrento and Cape Schanck. Tugs were sent to her assistance, but the captain declined to accept the help offered. The pilot, however, locked the captain up in his cabin, and gave orders for the tugs to make faat and take tbe vessel in tow. The anohora were out, which the tugs being unaware of, everything was carried away
when they went ahead. The ship began to bump heavily, and most of the crew took to the boats. One of the boats was capsized and five men drowned, and many others severely injured. A rocket line was fired across the ship, and the carpenter, who with the captain and a sailor, had at first declined to leave the ship, was landed in safety. The captain followed, and got ashore in an unconscious state. The vessel then began to break up, and the mate and sailor essayed to land by the rocket line. The mate was drowned, but the sailor reached the shore.
