NOTES FROM TUAPEKA.

» (From our own Correspondent). Lawjrencb, May 11. At the first meeting of the Lawrence District High School Committee, Mr D. M'lntosh, who has been a member for some time, was duly elected chairman, and Mr G. Jeffsry was re-elected honorary secretary. Ever since the present Act came into force the clerical work has been done honorary by various members, thus enabling all the moneys received from the Board to be expended for school purposes, and I notice that the same is now done in all the schools in Dunedin, although at one time £100 was paid the secretary there when the schools were under one committee. Oar local "kickists" are busy practising for the match against the Milton Club on Saturday next on the Lawrence ground. On Thursday afternoon a capital game was played between Bides chosen by H. Fraer and R. Roscoe, and some good play eventmtcd although Fraer's side won by 17 points to 1. I hear a match is to be played at Milton on the 25th between our local juniors and the Ravens of Dunedin, a junior club in that city, of which one or two ex Lawrence boys are members. At a meeting of the Lawrence AtheDEeum committee held recently, Mr Fraer, President, in the chair, the librarian reported there was a credit balance of J3OO, that 13 new members had joined since January, that about ,£SO worth of new books would arrive in June, making fully 4500 volumes in the library. It was decided to order books quarterly from Home instead of yearly. On the recommendation of the House Committee it was also decided to make some desirable alterations to the reading-room to make it more comfortable for the members. The usual meeting of the Tuapeka County Council was held on Friday. All the members were in attendance, and a good deal of business was transacted. The abolition of the duty on gold is affecting the revenues of the County, and the following resolution was passed — " That the Chairman write to the Government requesting them to provide revenue for the maintenance of main roads, or otherwise to have the Gold Duty Abolition Act repealed." Accounts amounting to £905 were passed for payment. Several works were authorised to be done, and the meeting closed after a good deal of routine business had been attended to. The Borough Council has been busy for some time asphalting the various footpaths throughout the municipality, and locomotion should be much easier than hitherto during the winter months. Our census returns show a populatiou in Lawrence of 1019. Of this number 514 are males and 505 females.
