THE NEW COMMITTEE CRITICISED.

To the Editor. £ir, — While perusing your report of the proceedings of the first meeting of the newly-elected school committee, I was more than amused at the utter want of consistency of one of the members. Apparently anxious to conserve the funds, which he understands are very scarce, he suggests that one of the great unpaid undertake the work as an honorary office. This is ail very well in its way, but methinks the secretary well earns his money by the interest he takes in the sohool and all that appertains thereto. But how in the name of commonsense and consistency could the gentleman who is so much concerned about the shortness of funds secand a motion which brings with it an unnecessary expense passes my comprehension. Why go to the expanse of £2 at all when there are plenty of rooms at the school ? As to the maintenance of the fire and the lighting} that is a small mattereight or nine shillings for the year at the ontßide. Comparisons, as Mrs Partington , puts it, are,. u odorous," but if Mr Murray :l

could tramp to and fro from Clarksville to attend the meetings of the old committee' surely the gentlemen who were so very anxious to get into office will think it no hardship to walk to the school, where they would be on the spot to inspect any alteration or repairs that might be needed. — I am, &c, X.Y.Z. Milton, May 7.
