THROUGH OUR EXCHANGES.

HI • It is proposed, if permitted, to introduce into the London streets the steamcarriages which have proved a success ia Paris. They are said to be more under the control of the driver than ia a horse. London is to have its Central Railway from the western suburbs beneath Oxford-street to the city. Workmen's trains will run any distance up to six miles for one penny. At Chester, a widower aged 77, who had been three times married, was sued by a twice widowed lady, aged 60, for breach of promise. She was awarded £50. The defendant changed his mind on the wedding morn. Not having been able to secure Shakespeare's house, Milton's cottage, or Temple Bar for American consumption, our enterprising Yankee cousins had their eyes on John Bunyan's cottage at Elstowe. A Chicago physician commissioned a Bedford gentleman to purchase the cottage for transport to the World's 3Tair in what some people call Hogopolis. The negotiations, it is scarcely necessary to state, were not successful. English Judges declared that the dishornera of cattle were guilty of cruelty. Eive Judges sitting in Edinburgh have reversed the decision. They regard the dishorning of cattle as necessary in the interests of the animals themselves. A sentence of 10 days' imprisonment with hard labor, to be followed by three years in a reformatory, was passed by the Bewdley magistrates upon a girl aged 11', convicted of stealing four monthly parts of a magazine. The accused pleaded that she only borowed the books to read. The passing of such a severe sentence led to a great uproar in the Court. Ultimately the magistrates called back the girl, retried the case, reversed their former decision, and simply bound the girl over to come up for judgment when called upon.
