TURNING FIRST SuD,

Gore, Monday,
Tbe turning of tbe first sod • f the Waimea Plains Railway, took place this afternoon. Al- ' hough the affair was onW taken in hand ou Saturday evei me, itweut<ffv*ry successfully, the Hon. Mr Ballance performing the ceremmiy. After doing so, he spoke in a eulogistic manner about the prospects of the Company, and prodieted a great future for the district. A good number of visitors came from Inveroargill b}' special train, and there was a fair attendance of the residents of the district;, bufc there was do tim** to make the matter public.
Toere was a splendid spread in Green's Hall after the sod was turned, and Mr G. M. Bell, Chairman of the Company, occupied the chair, and at which were Messrs ballance, Bastings, Peldwick, **nd Shanks, fvl.H. K.'s.
Messrs Bis tings and Shanks spoke in laudatc ry terms of the country through which the line passed.
The Hon. Mr Bdlance said tbat tbe enterprise of the Company deserved to be crowned witb every success, and wbich be believe ■ would be the result. He said this was the first railway commenced under the District Railways •let.
