BALCLUTHA.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of this Council was ■' held in ihe Athenaeum, on Tuesday evening — Present Crs Cramohd (in the ;;"v ohair^, Canning, Dunne, Hogg, M'Donald and Doull. The minutes of tbe previous meeting were read and confirmed. _■■' TENDERS. The following tenders were opened for raising arid gravelling Charlo tie-street—- A.. Barr, £73 ; Chirnside, £65~ 14s 6d ; D. M Kenzie, £71 16s 4d. ; Extension of DongI»8-street-r-M'Kenzie, £54 7s 9i; Chirnside, £45 19a 9d ; Ray, £9i. :-'7f ■"■ ". . \ : , '■;' . ■ Formation of Oromar and Stamford-streeta —Chirnside, £42 10s ; Rowley, £26 15s ; Budge,\26 15sOr Canning suggested that as the amount for Charlotte-street hai exceeded the amount which had been estimated, it would be better to allow the matter to stand over. Another reason for doing so, was that the work of metal! ing the Main South Road was one cf more urgent neceeßity. He. would move that the gravelling of Charlottestreet should stand over. ; CrDoull seconded the motion. . Gr M'Donald had only been threo months in ihe Council, and to his knowledge this was the third attempt which had been made to complete Charlotte-street. - He would move as an amendment that the lowest tender should be accepted. Or Dunne in seconding the motion, said that he looked at the work as being more of a protective work to the town, than a necessary one for the street. It would be a protection against the encroachment of the river. ■.■.'. ■ ", ..'.'. ■.. "• . . • •,..■ .-.: .;■: Or Hogg endorsed the remarks of Crs M'Donald and Dunne. After some further discussion, the motion was withdrawn, and the amendment on being put was agreed to. John; Budges' tender, of £36 15s ; for formation of Cromar and Stamford-streets, was accepted, as also was A: Chirnside' s tender, of £45 19s 9d, for the extension of Doug-lass-street. BETUEKS OF EXPEKDITtJRB. In pursuance of the instructions received at the last; meetiDg of Council, the clerk laid upon the table, the following returns of | expenditure from [lst August,' 18*6, to Ist August; 1877— Sinking test wells, £12 lfo 9d; tree planting, £35.^ 8s ; advertising, £29 14s :6d; ;.■;" /\. ; y';y ; . ' ' ; Or Canning said he noticed that the Council's advertiseiaenta were being spun ont of late. If the » Clutha Leader * would oiily pack them a little more, tbe Council would then be able to give a better salary to the Town Clerk ; as his impression was, that the Town Cle^k was not sufficiently paid. H/e was satisfied that the advertiseing had cost £10 or £11- more than what was put down in the returns. Cr Dunne mave^— "' That the report of the returng of expenditure should be referred to the Finance Committee, to carry out the ideas of the Council," Cr Qanniqg ncoondod the motion, which was agreed ta.
