MAORIS OUT OF HAND
TWO YOUTHS IMPRISONED
"The probation officer in the Pukekohe district reports that the young Maoris in the district are out of control," stated the Auckland probation officer, Mr. J. Anderson, to-day, when two young Maoris, David Cash (18) and' Rata Mikaere (19) came before Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court for sentence for theft from huts in the women's section of the market garden division at Pukekohe. Mr. Anderson said that at the time of this offence Mikaere was on probation for a previous breaking and entering offence.
His Honor remarked that the Pukekohe officer' reported that the young Maoris in the district were uncontrollable through being able to earn good money at any time by inconstant work, and that they therefore worked only irregularly and spent their money in gambling and drinking. He could not, therefore, extend probation. Mikaere would be sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment, to be followed by twelve months' reformative detention. Cash would be sentenced to six months' imprisonment, to be fol? lowed by nine months' reformative i detention.
