CONDITIONS IN NORTHLAND

O.C. WHANGAREI, this day. Thought by some who have been in the vicinity to be snow, but what may be the aftermath of a particularly severe hailstorm which occurred late yesterday afternoon, a white mantle lay on the Waima foothills this morning. Following the longest period of uninterrupted frosts ever recorded, the weather in the Middle North yesterday was bitter. The top of the Waima Range, extending eastward to Puketona, is heavily forested, but on the sparsely settled foothills, where a clearing has occurred, particularly on the Whakatere spur, a white sheen was still, visible at midmorning to-day from Kaikohe,- 12 miles , distant. Snow fell on tiie Waima Range about 10 years ago.
