GAS INDUSTRY
INQUIRY OPENED
SEQUEL TO RECENT STRIKE
A departmental inquiry into the gas industry in Auckland, ordered by the Acting-Minister of Labour, Mr. O'Brien, was begun this morning. The inquiry is a sequel to the strike of retort house workers at the Auckland gas works last month following on the dismissal by the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee of the appeals of two of the workers against being directed to other employment. The men resumed work on April 28, after a statement by the Minister that if they returned to work he would have their case investigated. The transfer of the two men to other employment was suspended in the meantime. The inquiry, which Is expected to occupy some days, is presided over by Mr. S. Ritchie, and associated with him. are Messrs. W. J. Wakclin and G. Brown. The Auckland Trades Council, which has been interested in the dispute in connection with the retort house workers, is represented by Mr. A. Drennan, president, and Mr. W. Ashton, secretary. Mr. R. Worley, general manager of the Auckland Gas Company, represents the company. The inquiry is being conducted in committee.
