SEASONAL WORK

NEED TO PROVIDE LABOUR CALL OX BUSINESS FIRMS With a view to emphasising the urgency of providing men for seasonal work in the freezing and fertiliser industries, a meeting of representatives of warehouses, stock and station agencies, breweries and other firms was addressed by the district manpower officer, Mr. C. G. S. Ellis, yesterday. The freezing and fertiliser industries, said Mr. Ellis, would shortly be faced with a shortage of labour, which, although acute, would be of short duration only. The business firms were being asked for 6 per cent of their male operatives, in general for a two-monthly period. Similar representations had been made to the public service, and, out of the total male staff of 1190 in the 16 departments dealt with, over 30 men had already been directed to start seasonal work early this week. A further group of 40 would be directed to the fertiliser works by the end of the week. An approach to banks and insurance offices would be made in the next few days and men on military or other sex-vice leave were also being appealed to for assistance. It was expected that the seasonal work would fall off in other districts after the next two months, said Mr. Ellis, thus allowing a return to the normal labour procurement methods.
