APPEAL FOR BUTCHER

AN UNUSUAL POSITION An unusual case was head at a sitting of the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee this morning, when William Settersfield Goldsmith (Mr., Burt) appealed against the refusal of the manpower officer to grant him permission to employ Cyril Walter Holloway, a butcher. The appeal was opposed by Holloway's employers, R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd. (Mr. Reed). Mr. Burt said that Holloway had previously been granted permission to leave Hellaby's employment in order to work for Goldsmith, but an appeal by the employers *was allowed because the committee was not satisfield that Holloway would benefit financially if he left his employment. Holloway, however, was not asked to give evidence, and the facts were that the present appellant was prepared to give him a third of the profits as a bonus. Mr. Reed referred to the staffing difficulties experienced by Hellaby's, and said that, if Holloway was allowed to leave it would not be fair to the other employees. The committee reserved its decision.
