CONVERSION OF CAR
TWO MEN SENTENCED Jointly charged with the unlawful conversion of a motor car valued at £200 on July 26, James Albert Kean (27), labourer, and John Francis Keen (30), also a labourer, appeared before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant Sparks said that at 32.30 last Wednesday morning, while the police were searching a building in Albert Street, they saw the two accused drive up in a motor car. Both men ran away, but were caught. The car had been taken from Vincent Street.
Mr. W, Noble, who appeared for the two accused, admitted that his clients were on license from prison and had formidable records. In making a plea for leniency, counsel said the two men had met an American who gave them some "Island juice," which seemed to have affected them. He pointed out that they had merely sat in the motor car and driven it downhill a few chains. They had been walking away when arrested, and had left the car in Albert Street.
After perusing the records of the two men, Mr. Paterson sentenced each to six months' imprisonment.
