FORCED DOWN IN SEA
AIRMEN PADDLE TO SAFETY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
An illustration of the efficiency of the safety devices installed in aircraft flown by members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force was given last night, when three airmen reached safety after a forced landing in the sea near a North Island air station.
When a machine engaged on night flying exercises was reported overdue, an aerial search was immediately instituted and before long the occupants of the missing aircraft were seen making toward the shore in the collapsible dinghy which is part of the regular equipment carried.
Within a short time the men had paddled ashore none the worse for their adventure. They were: FlightSergeant J. H. Hope, of Wellington, Sergeants E. J. Newton, of Ohinewai, and W. G. A. McCloud, of Kumara.
