SOME FINE FINISHES
SWIMMING CARNIVAL SHORE CLUB'S SUCCESS
Consistently good fields and some stirring races, notably the 66 2-3 yds men's handicap, the 50yds intermediate girls, and the 66 2-3 yds girls' open handicaps, featured the North Shore Club's swimming carnival at the Tepid Baths last night. Among the innovations were a medley race with six ■ competitors a side (two breaststroke, two backstroke and two freestyle) and a crocodile. The former was actually won by Mount.Eden, but it was not eligible owing to not having two girls to swim breaststroke. Its last swimmer was" R. Frankham, who displayed his characteristic sprinting ability to overhaul B. Clench, the last swimmer for North Shore. Frankham and Miss L. Hill finished second in the dual relay, another interesting contest, won by Mrs. Warbrick and J. Warbrick. On the limit, the winners were in receipt of 12s from the scratch-markers. A butterfly breaststroke race was won by Miss N. Bridson, who also swam brilliantly in the handicap freestyle events and showed'her versatility by swimming breaststroke in the medley. A newcomer to the sport was an American, R. Walker, who competed in the backstroke on an assessment of 675, the scratch mark. He won his heat in 69 4-5s and was third in the final. His swimming and turning was impressive. Clubs are indicated by the following abbreviations: —Mount Eden (Mt. E.). Newmarket (N.), North Shore (N.S.), Otahuhu (O.).
