STORES BESIEGED
SALES OF WOMEN'S HOSIERY
City stores, selling stockings which had recently arrived from America, were besieged by women for over four hours to-day. Attracted by displays in the windows, crowds quickly gathered, and when the doors were opened hundreds of women surged into the stores to push their way towards the counters where the stockings were on sale. Queues of over 500 people stretched from the counters to the street. The crowds, at first uncontrollable, soon became orderly, and the sate of stockings proceeded smoothly. People continued to arrive and the crowds remained at about the same size until the stockings were all sold shortly after 1 o'clock.
