GAS CONTROL SCHEME
PRODUCTION COUNCIL BALLOT AMONG WORKERS An announcement that the Auckland Trades Council of the Federation of Labour was conducting a secret ballot to elect a workers' representative to the Auckland Gas Company Production Council was made to-day by Mr. W. A. Leggett, deputysupervisor of the gas company's cooperative scheme. The production council, said Mr. Leggett, would comprise four representatives of the groups within the Gas -Workers' Union, four representatives of the company, who would be nominated by the management and not elected by ballot. It was expected that the ballot would be finalised by next Tuesday, enabling the council to hold its initial meeting on March 23. The large amount of preliminary work in connection with the scheme was made easy by the ready assistance of both the management and the workers, said Mr. Leggett. Provided the coal situation eased, it should be possible to judge the results of the scheme within the next six months. Production of gas for the community's needs was the first, object of the scheme, although* it had been possible, even at this stage, to proceed immediately, with the company's assistance, to construct an up-to-date cafeteria at the works.
