ORDER OF ST. JOHN
REVIEW OF THE PAST JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS The achievements of the Auckland branches of the Order of St. John since the inception of the Order in the city were the subject of eulogy by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, Avhen speaking at a reception held in the Town Hall last night as part of the jubilee celebrations.
His Excellency agreed with Archship Averill in urging the establishment of cadets as the means of including children, in the organisation. He referred to the development of the Order's brigade work since its establishment in Britain 75 years ago, and, dealing with the future, expressed the hope that the Order, if it so desired, would be given an opportunity of playing a part in post-war rehabilitation.
Reference to the city's indebtedness to the work of the association and the brigade was made by the Mayer, Mr. Allum, president of the Auckland centre, who was in the chair.
Giving an account of the growth of the organisation in Auckland, Mr. D. F Mackay, chairman of the association and commissioner of the brigade, made special reference to the long service given by ihe late Mr. W. Rattray and the late Mr. C. J. Tunics. Reference was made by Archbishop Averill to the growth in membership. The Knight Commander of the Order in New Zealand, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, paid tribute to the efficiency of the Auckland centre. He expressed pleasure on account of the number of Maoris included in the centre's membership.
